With the release of CorelDraw Graphics Suite X8, Corel has unleashed a coordinated update to its multi-app creative flagship targeted to businesses, entrepreneurs, graphics pros, and hobbyists. The suite welcomes Windows 10 with a new Font Manager app, variable screen resolution, and an array of additions and enhancements to ensure that users stay focused and productive.

When to Use Adobe Illustrator vs. Photoshop vs. January 27, 2012 By Printwand Staff 139 Comments. 139 Responses to “When to Use Adobe Illustrator vs. Photoshop vs. I use my son’s adobe software because of cost and due to extenuating circumstances cannot at present afford any extras than adobe. Comparison of desktop publishing software. PageMaker* Adobe Systems: 7.0.2 (March 30. CorelDRAW: Yes supported versions. The difference between Pagemaker and Illustrator? Hi I have an issue at work. I deal with a printing company that does all our brochures in Pagemaker 7 and I can't make any changes with the copy of Illustrator 7 that I have now.

Major updates to Corel’s two main apps—CorelDraw and Photo-Paint—provide advanced object editing options, including improved Knife and Shape tools, new font handling and filtering, Healing Clone and Gaussian Blur lens tools, enhanced interface customization, and more.

If that sounds intimidating for newcomers and past users, it doesn’t have to be. Corel’s new built-in interactive Startup tours help mitigate the learning curve, while the apps’ user guides are now available as e-books.

Why this matters: CorelDraw Graphics Suite is a PC-only app that specifically targets the Windows workflow and competes directly with Adobe Illustrator, offering similar features and benefits. The 27-year-old CorelDraw is an institution for PC artists who don’t need or want to adopt Adobe’s subscription-based Creative Cloud for the sake of standardizing around Photoshop and Illustrator.

4K compatibility comes to CorelDraw

Download

CorelDraw X8’s updated interface now supports Ultra HD 4K monitors, letting you view apps on the highest-resolution screens available. New multi-monitor support and individual monitor interface scaling let you use a range of higher-resolution monitors and laptops while offering flexibility and optimal scaling for those with lower-resolution displays, even when used side by side.

I was able to open a X8 window on my HP Spectre x360 laptop at native resolution alongside my 27-inch HD monitor. I could adjust them independently via the Workspace Appearance control.

Corel is already compatible with Wacom tablets, however, the new X8 version also supports Windows Real-Time Stylus, with no-driver pressure sensitivity and tilt that gives you full stroke control in the drawing and image editing apps.

You can now use different pen-compatible tablets and styluses (such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, Surface Book, or any other RTS-compatible tools) with the software to tailor them to your own stroke strength.

More font management and graphics tools

For the font-obsessed, a new Font List Box in both CorelDraw and Photo-Paint lets you find, filter, and view specific fonts while streamlining the selection process. You can sort fonts by weight, width, scripts, and more or use keywords to find new fonts.

Corel’s new Font Manager—a standalone utility—lets you access online fonts from the company’s Content Exchange as well as your own system.

You can browse, search, and preview glyph sets and add customized collections. When you add folders and collections, all fonts—even ones that aren’t installed—are accessible and usable from the apps’ Font List Box.

CorelDraw X8 implements a multitude of new vector drawing features, from letting you hide objects and groups of objects so only needed ones are displayed, to an improved Knife tool that lets you split vector objects, groups of objects, bitmaps, and text with straight, freehand, or Bézier lines.

An enhanced node selection feature lets you shift-click to select adjacent nodes with the Shape tool. Then, you can copy or cut specific parts of a curve segment and paste it as an object, making it easy to create similar new shapes.

A new Feathering Direction button on the property bar helps to create natural-looking drop shadows, complete with Gaussian Blurs.

Photo-Paint expands its palette of tricks

Photo-Paint, the other major tool in the suite, has its share of new visual treats.

The new Healing Clone tool—great for anything from landscapes to faces—removes unwanted items from images by painting with a sampled color or texture.

A slider-based Straighten Image dialog lets you correct perspective distortions and tilt, especially for photos with straight lines and flat surfaces.

The Gaussian Blur special effect is now available as a lens, so you can blur images non-destructively (without overwriting the original).

The lens is created as a separate object on a layer above the background, so you can edit it separately.

Customizable interface lets you make it your own

CorelDraw Graphics Suite X8 continues to offer extensive interface customization options. In addition to the scaling discussed earlier, you can also choose among light and dark themes and any background and window border colors you want.

You can expand your creative tools by downloading applications, plug-ins, and extensions directly from within CorelDraw and Photo-Paint—as well as obtain a free license for the company’s Website Creator.

The new version is available for download now (boxes ship on April 5) for $499, with upgrades at $199. Subscription pricing is $30 per month or $198 per year. Like Adobe’s Creative Cloud, subscribers get early access to updated features as they emerge. An upgrade program is available for perpetual license holders for $99 per year. Commercial and educational volume licenses are also available. In addition to Windows 10, it’s compatible with Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 in 32- and 64-bit versions.

History[edit]

In 1987, Corel engineers Michel Bouillon and Pat Beirne undertook to develop a vector-based illustration program to bundle with their desktop publishing systems. That program, CorelDraw, was initially released in 1989. CorelDraw 1.x and 2.x ran under Windows 2.x and 3.0. CorelDraw 3.0 came into its own with Microsoft's release of Windows 3.1. The inclusion of TrueType in Windows 3.1 transformed CorelDraw into a serious illustration program capable of using system-installed outline fonts without requiring third-party software such as Adobe Type Manager; paired with a photo-editing program (Corel Photo-Paint), a font manager and several other pieces of software, it was also part of the first all-in-one graphics suite.

Features[edit]

Supported platforms[edit]

CorelDraw was originally developed for Microsoft Windows 3 and currently runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 .[32] The latest version, 2019, was released on March 12, 2019[33].

CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2019 for Mac OS X was released on March 12, 2019,[34] after an 18-year absence (the last version for OS X was version 11, released in 2001).

With version 6, CorelDraw introduced the automation of tasks using a Corel proprietary scripting language, COREL Script. With version 10, support for VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) was introduced for scripting by what Corel calls now macros. Corel recommends to no longer use the COREL Script language but only VBA.

Previously supported platforms[edit]

Until the release of version 5, CorelDraw versions existed for Windows 3.1x, CTOS and OS/2.

CDR file format[edit]

Structure[edit]

In its first versions, the CDR file format was a completely proprietaryfile format primarily used for vector graphic drawings, recognizable by the first two bytes of the file being 'WL'. Starting with CorelDraw 3, the file format changed to a Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) envelope, recognizable by the first four bytes of the file being 'RIFF', and a 'CDR*vrsn' in bytes 9 to 15, with the asterisk '*' being just a blank in early versions.[36] Beginning with CorelDraw 4 it included the version number of the writing program in hexadecimal ('4' meaning version 4, 'D' meaning version 14). The actual data chunk of the RIFF remains a Corel proprietary format.

From version X4 (14) on, the CDR file is a ZIP-compressed directory of several files, among them XML files and the RIFF-structured riffdata.cdr with the familiar version signature in versions X4 (CDREvrsn) and X5 (CDRFvrsn), and a root.dat with CorelDraw X6, where the bytes 9 to 15 look slightly different -- 'CDRGfver' in a file created with X6. 'F' was the last valid hex digit, and the 'fver' now indicates that the letter before no longer represents a hex digit.

There is no publicly available CDR file format specification.[37][38]

Other CorelDraw file formats include CorelDraw Compressed (CDX), CorelDraw Template (CDT)[39] and Corel Presentation Exchange (CMX).[40]

Use of CDR files in other programs[edit]

In December 2006 the sK1open-source project team started to reverse-engineer the CDR format.[41] The results and the first working snapshot of the CDR importer were presented at the Libre Graphics Meeting 2007 conference taking place in May 2007 in Montreal (Canada).[42] Later on the team parsed the structure of other Corel formats with the help of the open source CDR Explorer.[43] As of 2008, the sK1 project claims to have the best import support for CorelDraw file formats among open source software programs. The sK1 project developed also the UniConvertor, a command line open source tool which supports conversion from CorelDraw ver.7-X4 formats (CDR/CDT/CCX/CDRX/CMX) to other formats. UniConvertor is also used in the Inkscape and Scribus open source projects as an external tool for importing CorelDraw files.[44][45][46]

In 2007, Microsoft blocked CDR file format in Microsoft Office 2003 with the release of Service Pack 3 for Office 2003.[47][48] Microsoft later apologized for inaccurately blaming the CDR file format and other formats for security problems in Microsoft Office and released some tools for solving this problem.[49]

Difference Between Coreldraw And Adobe Pagemaker Software Pdf

In 2012 the joint LibreOffice/re-lab team implemented libcdr, a library for reading CDR files from version 7 to X3 and CMX files.[50] The library has extensive support for shapes and their properties, including support for color management and spot colors, and has a basic support for text.[51] The library provides a built-in converter to SVG, and a converter to OpenDocument is provided by writerperfect package. The libcdr library is used in LibreOffice starting from version 3.6,[52] and thanks to public API it can be freely used by other applications.

Other applications supporting CDR files[edit]

CDR file format import is partially or fully supported in following applications:

  • Adobe Illustrator - CorelDraw 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10[53]
  • Corel PaintShop Photo Pro
  • Corel WordPerfect Office
  • Inkscape with UniConvertor installed; partial support[44][46]
  • LibreOffice with libcdr installed - CorelDraw 7 to X3
  • Adobe FreeHand - CorelDraw 7, 8[54]
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 - CorelDraw! drawing file versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 (.cdr), Corel Clipart (.cmx)[55][56]
  • sK1 - partial support[41][57]
  • Xara Designer Pro and Xara Photo & Graphic Designer - early versions of CorelDraw CDR and CMX
